Bulldog
Conveyor Belt Misalignment & Rip Detection Switch

The range of Bulldog misalignment and rip detection electro-mechanical switches are designed to detect dangerous misalignment and/or rip on open belt conveyors.

The switch will detect horizontal misalignment of belts. When contact is made with the roller, the roller arm will be forced to pivot by the belt, activating a switch at 20º to trigger an alarm, and 35º to trigger a conveyor shut down. The switches are usually installed in pairs on opposite sides of the belt.

For belt rip detection, a flexible cable is set below the running conveyor belt approximately 20-30mm. It is attached by a rare earth magnet at each end and if the belt is ripped or damaged, it will impact the cable to disconnect the magnet from the Bulldog and trigger a conveyor shutdown.

Can I use the Bulldog to monitor belt alignment on a bucket elevator?
No. The Bulldog is designed to monitor belt alignment and/or rip on open belt conveyors. Because it requires deflection of the roller to detect misalignment, it is not suitable for bucket elevators or enclosed belt conveyors.

Will the same model of bulldog monitor both belt alignment and rip or do I have to choose one or the other?
Bulldogs are available in various configurations including belt rip only, belt alignment only, or both belt rip and alignment. See the manual for the correct part number for your application.

How many bulldogs are required to monitor my open belt conveyor?
There will generally be a minimum of four bulldogs required to monitor an open belt conveyor. One pair will be mounted near the head pulley and the second pair will be mounted near the tail pulley. Depending on the length and other attributes of the conveyor, more bulldogs may be needed to fully protect the belt.
